LIPOSUCTION ALSO KNOWN AS LIPOPLASTY
:
- ANAESTHETIC - GENERAL
- STAY IN HOSPITAL
1 DAY AND 1 NIGHT
- RECUPERATION 10
DAYS
If your weight is more or less within the normal bounds
dictated by your age and height but you are continually
plagued by isolated areas of fat that simply won’t budge,
resulting in an overall body shape that isn’t in proportion,
you are more than likely a very good candidate for Liposuction
(also known as Lipoplasty.)
The reason for the accumulation of fat in certain
areas can be diet related but the main reason lies in
your family genes. Your inherited physiology will undoubtedly
influence the number of fat cells you have in these
various areas of your body and will not change once
you reach puberty.
Your eating habits will of course effect the increase
or decrease of fat in the cells but will not in any
way alter the number of cells and their position within
your body. If for instance you have inherited a greater
number of fat cells on your legs and a smaller number
on your stomach you will always have a greater amount
of fat on your legs than on your stomach. And this condition
would persist regardless of how much dieting and exercise
you do.
This procedure can be effective for men and women of
all ages with relatively small fat deposits in most
regions of the body. However the best results are achieved
in age groups whose skin hasn’t lost its elasticity
thus enabling the skin to regain a smooth appearance
once the fat cells have been removed from underneath
it. In older patients lacking sufficient elasticity
a tightening of the skin will more than likely be necessary
in addition to the Liposuction.
YOUR MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
RELATING TO YOUR SURGEON AND YOUR SURGERY ANSWERED:
HOW WILL I CHOOSE THE RIGHT SURGEON
FOR MY PROCEDURE?

surgeons are highly trained and experienced in all
cosmetic/plastic surgery procedures they naturally have
individual, specialist areas of interest and expertise.
Once Surgical Attractions has assessed your particular
desires and aspirations concerning the outcome of your
procedure we will marry them to the surgeon best suited
to your special needs. The surgeon’s CV details will

HOW WILL MY SURGEON ASSESS MY PARTICULAR
SURGICAL REQUIREMENTS?
When you complete the Medical History section of the
General Enquiry Form you will be asked to submit it
together with a clear and reasonably close-up digital
photograph (in colour) of the area of your body requiring
surgery.
Once your recommended surgeon has assessed your particular
requirements along with your medical history and digital
photo, Surgical Attractions will arrange an obligation
free teleconference between the two of you.
At this stage your surgeon will not only be in possession
of all the facts relating to your particular case but
also be in a position to recommend the exact method
to be employed to achieve the results you desire. Your
surgeon will also be available at this point to answer
any questions you may have as regards your surgery and
the outcome.
You will be encouraged at all times prior to your
surgery to continue getting to know your surgeon by
asking as many questions as you like.
On arrival in South Africa Surgical Attractions will

Once again the method of surgery and the desired outcome
will be discussed along with any other questions you
may have. If at this point you decide not to go ahead
with the procedure your decision will be respected.
LIPOSUCTION ALSO KNOWN AS LIPOPLASTY
(CONTINUED):
CAN LIPOSUCTION ONLY BE DONE ON
MY TUMMY AND HIPS?
The areas of your arms (upper), back, breasts, cheeks,
legs (calves, ankles, thighs and inner knees), neck
and waist can all undergo Liposuction in addition to
your tummy and hip areas. What’s more a variety of areas
can be attended to during the same procedure. Men and
boys who suffer from an overdeveloped breast area are
also good candidates for Liposuction.
HOW WILL THE PROCEDURE BE PERFORMED?
As with most surgical procedures surgeons have differing
opinions when it comes to which is the best method of
Liposuction. However you can rest assured that once
your particular circumstances have been thoroughly evaluated
by your surgeon the best method for you personally will
be suggested.
Although Liposuction can be performed under local
anaesthetic generally speaking surgeons prefer the patient
to undergo a general anaesthetic mainly for the patient's
overall comfort.
Before commencing the procedure some surgeons choose
to inject the body with fluids containing adrenaline
and lidocaine to minimise bruising and assist in ‘thinning’
the fat to be suctioned out. Others prefer what is termed
a ‘dry’ technique.
Normally the unwanted body fat is vacuumed from the
body by means of a tube called a Cannula that is in
turn connected to a high pressure suctioning unit. The
Cannula is inserted into the body through various incisions
made in the area to be treated and guided through the
suctioning process by your surgeon’s experienced hands.
The incisions should be so small and well positioned
as to render them inconspicuous after surgery.
In order to help perfect the final result you will
be expected to wear a pressure garment for about six
weeks following surgery.
SHOULD I TAKE ANY PRECAUTIONS PRIOR
TO SURGERY?
If you are a smoker you will be asked to stop smoking
prior to surgery in order to prevent unnecessary complications.
Arnica tablets, Vitamin E in large doses, analgesics
like Aspirin and even some anti-inflammatory drugs should
also not be taken prior to surgery as they can promote
bleeding during the procedure.
Your surgeon will however give your personal advice
in this regard.
HOW WILL I FEEL AFTERWARDS?
You will of course experience a certain amount of
swelling and bruising following this procedure and while
the swelling usually dissipates quite rapidly the bruising
can last longer. This of course does depend on your
individual response to the procedure. The same applies
to any numbness you may experience in certain areas
and the length of time it will take before feeling is
fully restored.
Dressings (if any) will be changed and finally removed
according to your particular response to the procedure.
Stitches however are generally removed within 10 to
12 days following surgery.
Although you will need to take great care not to exert
yourself beyond gentle movements within the first few
days following surgery you will be expected to move
about as much as possible in order to encourage good
blood circulation.
HOW SOON BEFORE MY LIFE’S BACK
TO NORMAL?
As is the case with most surgical procedures you will
be encouraged to take it easy after a Liposuction procedure.
Generally speaking however you should be able to carry
on with your life as usual within a couple of weeks
following surgery. It is advisable however to wait a
bit longer before commencing exercise routines. When
you do resume exercising it is also advisable to start
slowly and gradually build up. Provided your work isn’t
of a particularly strenuous nature you can resume working
within days after the initial recuperation.
RISKS
As with everything else in life there are also risks
involved in surgical procedures. No matter how good
the Surgeon performing the Surgery may be, complications
can arise. Therefore before proceeding with any surgery
of any kind please discuss all your concerns with your
surgeon and ask as many questions as you like so that
you are in a position to make an informed decision.
