7 to 10 DAYS
If your facial skin has become blotchy and/or wrinkled
over the years due to the aging process, has become scarred
due to acne, illness or injury or has suffered as a result
of exposure to the sun then you are more than likely a
good candidate for Skin Resurfacing utilizing the very
popular Laser method.
Other methods such as Chemical Peel, Dermabrasion
and Needle Abrasion are also used for Sin Resurfacing
and once your skin has been evaluated your surgeon will
determine whether the Laser method or one of the alternative
methods is best suited to your particular skin.
Your surgeon will then discuss the method with you
in detail so that you will know exactly what to expect
post-operatively. Your desires and expectation for the
procedure will also be discussed and you will be encouraged
to ask as many questions as you like prior to surgery.
YOUR MOST OFTEN ASKED QUESTIONS
REGARDING LASER RESURFACING ANSWERED:
HOW WILL I CHOOSE THE RIGHT SURGEON
FOR MY PROCEDURE?
Although all South Africa’s leading cosmetic
surgeons are highly trained and experienced in all
cosmetic/plastic surgery procedures they naturally have
individual, specialist areas of interest and expertise.
Once Surgical Attractions has assessed your particular
desires and aspirations concerning the outcome of your
procedure we will marry them to the surgeon best suited
to your special needs. The surgeon’s CV details will
then be sent to you for your perusal and acceptance.
HOW WILL MY SURGEON ASSESS MY PARTICULAR
SURGICAL REQUIREMENTS?
When you complete the Medical History section of the
General Enquiry Form you will be asked to submit it
together with a clear and reasonably close-up digital
photograph of the area of your body requiring surgery.
Once your recommended surgeon has assessed your particular
requirements along with your medical history and digital
photo, Surgical Attractions will arrange an obligation
free teleconference between the two of you.
At this stage your surgeon will not only be in possession
of all the facts relating to your particular case but
also be in a position to recommend the exact method
to be employed to achieve the results you desire. Your
surgeon will also be available at this point to answer
any questions you may have as regards your surgery and
the outcome.
You will be encouraged at all times prior to your
surgery to continue getting to know your surgeon by
asking as many questions as you like.
On arrival in South Africa Surgical Attractions will
arrange a personal meeting between you and your surgeon.
Once again the method of surgery and the desired outcome
will be discussed along with any other questions you
may have. If at this point you decide not to go ahead
with the procedure your decision will be respected.
SHOULD I TAKE ANY PRECAUTIONS PRIOR
TO SURGERY?
Treating your skin with special pre-operative creams
may be suggested by your surgeon who will also prescribe
antibiotics and anti viral drugs which you will be required
to take for a period of time before and after the procedure.
(Your surgeon will advise you more specifically about
this at the discussion stage.)
HOW WILL THE PROCEDURE BE PERFORMED?
Your surgeon is skilled in the application of the laser
and will know exactly how much or how little to apply
to your particular skin type and condition in order
to remove unwanted layers of skin and thereby reveal
a younger and smoother facial appearance.
WHICH KIND OF LASER WILL BE USED?
A carbon dioxide laser (CO2) known as the Erbium Laser
has become very popular of late. However it is often
used in conjunction with the Derma K Laser. Your surgeon
will recommend the correct laser for your particular
skin and condition.
HOW LONG WILL MY FACE TAKE TO HEAL?
Healing is largely dependent on the individual but
generally takes about 7 days. The skin will initially
erupt and as a result your face will need to be cleansed
and a special laser gel applied several times a day
during the recuperative phase in order to seal the skin
as it heals. The gel will also help to keep the skin
moist and thereby prevent it from drying out. It is
essential that the skin be prevented from drying and
as a result tightening during the recuperation phase.
HOW CAN I EXPECT TO LOOK AND FEEL
AFTER THE PROCEDURE?
You can expect to experience some discomfort and pain
(the degree being dependent on the individual) for a
couple of days post operatively – however this condition
will be alleviated with prescribed analgesics.
Immediately following the procedure your skin will
be red in colour but will lighten daily during recuperation
to a shade of pink – which can be concealed with make-up
after the face has healed. Your surgeon will be more
specific about when you can apply make-up and how much.
After approximately three months your skin will not
only be smooth in texture and youthful in appearance
but also have returned to its normal colour.
HOW SOON BEFORE MY LIFE IS BACK
TO NORMAL?
As with all surgical procedures it is advisable to
take it easy after Laser Skin Resurfacing. Great care
should be taken to protect your face (particularly from
the sun) and vigorous movement of any kind (as in exercise)
should be avoided. Also take care to protect your face
when bending and lifting objects. You can probably return
to work 2 weeks after surgery but preferably after 3
weeks.
LASER RESURFACING OF THE HANDS AND NECK CAN BE PERFORMED
AT THE SAME TIME AS THE FACE IF REQUIRED.
RISKS
As with everything else in life there are also risks
involved in surgical procedures. No matter how good
the Surgeon performing the Surgery may be, complications
can arise. Therefore before proceeding with any surgery
of any kind please discuss all your concerns with your
surgeon and ask as many questions as you like so that
you are in a position to make an informed decision.
